EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Duke Dimitry and St. Sergy at Redonezh before Battle with Tartars" transports us back to the year 1880. Painted by Aleksei Danilovich Kivshenko, this watercolor on paper masterpiece measures 33x44 cm and is currently housed in the Central Naval Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. The image depicts a powerful scene set amidst a dense woodland. In the foreground stands Duke Dimitry Ivanovich, adorned in his regal armor and brandishing a spear, ready for battle against the formidable Mongolian Tatar army. By his side stands St. Sergy of Radonege, an influential priest who founded the Troitsky Monastery. St. Sergy blesses Duke Dimitry with a crucifix held high above their heads as they prepare for what will be known as the Victory of Kulikovo on September 8th, 1380 - a significant triumph for Russian princes united against Mongol leader Mamai. Kivshenko's attention to detail is evident in every brushstroke; from the intricate folds of their cloaks to the dappled sunlight filtering through the trees behind them. The artist skillfully captures both tension and determination within this historical moment. This remarkable artwork serves as a testament to Russian history and its struggle for independence from foreign invaders throughout centuries past. It reminds us of bravery, faith, and unity – qualities that have shaped nations throughout time.
