EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Ms L. A. 139-Lisboa fol. 36 The Lord watching the people worship the beast of the sea in (XJL195858 Ms L. A. 139-Lisboa fol. 36 The Lord watching the people worship the beast of the sea in the presence of the red dragon, from the Gulbenkian Apocalypse, c. 1265-70)" takes us back to a mesmerizing medieval world filled with revelations and apocalyptic imagery. Created by an anonymous English School artist during the 13th century, this illuminated manuscript on vellum measures 26.8x21.7 cm and is currently housed at Museu Calouste Gulbenkian in Lisbon, Portugal. The scene depicted showcases a chilling moment as figures kneel before a fearsome creature known as "the beast of the sea". With its head resembling that of a lion and body adorned with ten horns like those mentioned in biblical texts, this malevolent being commands attention and adoration from its followers. Intriguingly, amidst this worshipping crowd stands Jesus Christ himself, represented by his divine mandorla or haloed aura. He watches over these proceedings alongside angels while Satan lurks nearby in his devilish form. This image captures both awe-inspiring illumination techniques and profound symbolism associated with medieval religious artistry. It serves as a reminder of humanity's fascination with good versus evil throughout history – an eternal struggle that continues to captivate our imagination even
