EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving, titled "The Double-headed Snake. The Black Butterflies, 1749-73" is a remarkable piece of art that showcases the talent and creativity of George Edwards and Michael Seligmann. Originally engraved by George Edwards in his renowned works "A Natural History of Uncommon Birds" and "Gleanings of Natural History" this print has been re-engraved by Seligmann, a German engraver, illustrator, and art dealer from Nuremberg. Combining Edwards' plates with Catesby's work from "A Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands". Seligmann translated the names into German while adding some unique figures and plants not found in the original illustrations. The image itself portrays a mesmerizing double-headed snake amidst a backdrop filled with black butterflies. The intricate details captured through the engravings bring these creatures to life on paper. It serves as a testament to both nature's wonders and human artistic skill. Displayed within this private collection, this print offers viewers an opportunity to appreciate the beauty found in reptiles, birds, animals, and natural history as depicted through exquisite illustration techniques. Serpens dilute fuscus barbadensis biceps (the scientific name for this species) is beautifully represented here. Thanks to ePurix Verlag Volker Christen for preserving this artwork that transcends time boundaries due to its out-of-copyright status. This enchanting piece will continue to captivate
