All the braces in this group were made by Marples at his Spring Lane works between 1853 and 1856. The brass casting is tapered for greater strength. All are marked on the screw-cap with an allusion to the arms of the Cutlers Company and the words: " W. MARPLES PATENTEE / 67 / SPRING LANE / SHEFFIELD", and on the lower front plate: " By Her Majestys Royal Letters Patent / WILLIAM MARPLES SOLE MANUFACTURER/ OF THE ULTIMATUM BRACE / SHEFFIELD".
