EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Aylesbury Place in Clerkenwell, London, in 1899. Taken by English photographer H. W. Fincham, this image is a testament to the living conditions of the time. Aylesbury Place was a collection of 29 small houses arranged around a courtyard with a shared tap. Built in the early 19th century, each house consisted of two tiny rooms stacked on top of each other, often accessed by ladders instead of stairs. The photograph showcases the dilapidated state of these dwellings and provides insight into the poverty-stricken street life experienced by its inhabitants during Victorian times. The cramped housing and lack of basic amenities highlight the social conditions and deprivation faced by many residents. Sadly, this historic neighborhood met its demise between 1900-1906 when it was demolished by London County Council as part of an effort to widen St John Street. This photo serves as documentation not only for architectural purposes but also as a poignant reminder of how urban areas were shaped by societal changes. Now preserved in a private collection, this image offers viewers an opportunity to reflect on London's past while shedding light on issues surrounding poverty and living conditions at that time.
