This is a cartoon etching by the well-known Victorian social caricaturist / cartoonist George Cruikshank (1792 - 1878), dated May 20th, 1828. (1828 is in the reign of William IV, but most of Cruikshanks artistic work was in the long reign of Queen Victoria.) Title: A Jolly Companion Description: Profile of a man made up of ingredients used to make an alcoholic punch drink. The body is made up of sugar-loaf (just the top is seen). For the head, there is the punch bowl, a wine decanter, a pair of glasses, a lemon, lemon-squeezer and a corkscrew to uncork the wine. A jolly companion indeed. In the 19th century, sugar was produced and presented in long cone-shaped sugarloafs. Designed Etched & Published by Geo. Cruikshank May 20th 1828
