Jacobs Ladder: Ramsgate
Jacobs Ladder was constructed In 1754, during the building of Ramsgate harbour. A timber staircase called `Jacobs Ladder, named after Jacob Stead, the carpenter who built it, was made at the end of the west pier for access to the harbour works from the cliff top. It sadly fell into decay and disrepair and the present stone staircase replaced it in 1826 and still used today

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic Jacobs Ladder in Ramsgate, a testament to the town's rich maritime history. Constructed in 1754 during the building of Ramsgate harbour, this timber staircase was named after Jacob Stead, the skilled carpenter who meticulously crafted it. Originally built to provide access from the cliff top to the bustling harbour works below, Jacobs Ladder played a vital role in facilitating trade and transportation. Over time, however, this once-grand structure fell into disrepair and decay. In 1826, a new stone staircase replaced its worn-out predecessor but retained its iconic name and purpose. Today, this enduring landmark continues to serve as a functional passageway for locals and visitors alike. Zel Hunt Artist and Photographer has masterfully captured both the historical significance and architectural beauty of Jacobs Ladder through their lens. The composition highlights every intricate detail of this magnificent stone staircase against a backdrop of stunning coastal scenery. As we gaze upon this photo print, we are reminded of how structures like Jacobs Ladder connect us with our past while remaining relevant in our present-day lives. It serves as an enduring symbol of human ingenuity and resilience throughout generations—a true testament to Ramsgate's vibrant heritage.
