Albatross Soaring, c1910–1913, (1913). Artist: Herbert Ponting

Albatross Soaring, c1910– 1913, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume I. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Albatross Soaring" captures the essence of adventure and exploration during the final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. Taken by renowned photographer Herbert Ponting, this image transports us back to a time when brave men embarked on treacherous journeys in pursuit of scientific knowledge and personal triumph. The Terra Nova Expedition, also known as the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), was comprised of a diverse team including geologists, zoologists, surgeons, engineers, and meteorologists. Led by Scott, their mission was twofold: to continue important scientific research initiated during the Discovery Expedition and to be the first to reach the elusive South Pole. In this particular photograph, we witness an albatross soaring majestically above icy waters. The bird's graceful flight symbolizes freedom amidst harsh conditions while serving as a reminder of nature's awe-inspiring beauty even in remote corners of our planet. However, despite their valiant efforts and unwavering determination, Scott's team arrived at the South Pole on 17 January 1912 only to discover that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had beaten them there by a month. Tragically delayed by blizzards and dwindling supplies on their return journey, Scott and his companions perished in March 1912. This poignant image serves as a testament to both human resilience in extreme environments and the sacrifices made in pursuit of knowledge. It stands as a tribute not only to those who lost their lives but also to all explorers who push boundaries for the betterment of humanity.
