Ascent of Mr Greens Balloon, 1845. Creator: Unknown

Ascent of Mr Greens Balloon, 1845. On Monday evening, Mr. [Charles] Green made a very beautiful ascent in his monster Nassau Balloon, from the grounds of Cremorne House, Chelsea [in London], which were crowded with company to witness the spectacle. There was on the occasion of this ascent some novelty to attract the spectators and to amuse them. In addition to Mr. Green...there was amongst the " intrepid aeronauts" the celebrated Mr. Thomas Matthews, the Clown of Drury Lane Theatre, who immediately before the ascent favoured his companions in the car, and the thousands of persons who surrounded it, with the favourite ballad of " Hot Codlins". Mr. Matthews was equipped in full theatrical costume; the rest of the party in clothes more appropriate for an aerial trip. From " Illustrated London News", 1845, Vol VII

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic moment of the "Ascent of Mr Greens Balloon" in 1845. The creator remains unknown, but their skillful engraving brings to life a remarkable event that took place at Cremorne House in Chelsea, London. The image showcases a large crowd gathered at the grounds of Cremorne House, eagerly anticipating the spectacle about to unfold before them. Amongst them is Mr. Charles Green, an intrepid aeronaut who prepared for his ascent in his magnificent Nassau Balloon. However, what made this particular occasion even more exciting was the presence of Mr. Thomas Matthews, renowned as the Clown of Drury Lane Theatre. Dressed in full theatrical costume, Mr. Matthews entertained both his fellow passengers and the thousands surrounding them with a rendition of his favorite ballad - "Hot Codlins". As he sang from within the balloon's car, laughter and amusement filled the air. This image not only captures an incredible feat of innovation and transportation during the 19th century but also highlights how entertainment played a significant role in attracting spectators to such events. It offers us a glimpse into Victorian-era tourism and showcases how people found joy and excitement through unique experiences like hot air ballooning. Preserved by "Illustrated London News", this engraving allows us to travel back in time and witness this extraordinary moment when man defied gravity with courage and humor amidst an enthralled audience.
