The Battle of Blenheim, 1704 (1906)
The Battle of Blenheim, 1704 (1906). Central portion of the original painting by Louis Laguerre. The Battle of Blenheim (referred to in some countries as the Battle of Hochstadt) was a major battle of the War of the Spanish Succession. The outcome of the battle was a victory for the British and allied army under the Duke of Marlborough and Prince Eugene of Savoy over the French and Bavarians. The French suffered 30, 000 casualties including over 3000 horsemen who drowned trying to flee across the River Danube. On behalf of a grateful nation, Queen Anne gave Marlborough the estate of Woodstock in Oxfordshire, together with an award of £ 240, 000 to build what would become known as Blenheim Palace. A print from Queen Anne, by Herbert Paul, Goupil and Co, London, 1906

Depicting a significant moment in the War of the Spanish Succession, this historic battle saw British and allied forces triumph over the French and Bavarians. The Duke of Marlborough and Prince Eugene of Savoy led their army to victory, resulting in 30,000 casualties for the French, including over 3,000 horsemen who tragically drowned while attempting to escape across the River Danube. In recognition of his remarkable leadership and success on behalf of Britain, Queen Anne bestowed upon Marlborough the Woodstock estate in Oxfordshire.
