Fridge assembly at the General Electric Company, Swinton, South Yorkshire, 1964. Artist

Fridge assembly at the General Electric Company, Swinton, South Yorkshire, 1964. Fridges roll off the end of the production line at the General Electric Co in Swinton (South Yorkshire). The assembly lines at the GEC factory (later to become Morphy Richards) were relocated from Birmingham after the Second World War due to a shortage of skilled labour, which preferred the car industry as it paid better wages. The Morphy Richards facility still stands on the site, but products are now imported from foreign manufacturers. January 1964

Fridge Assembly at the General Electric Company, Swinton, South Yorkshire, 1964

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a moment in time at the General Electric Company (GEC) factory in Swinton, South Yorkshire. It showcases the bustling assembly line where fridges are being meticulously crafted by skilled workers. The GEC factory was established in Swinton after World War II due to a shortage of skilled labor in Birmingham. The car industry offered higher wages, attracting workers away from other sectors. However, this did not deter GEC from producing high-quality electrical goods. In January 1964, as depicted in this image captured by Michael Walters of Paul Walters Worldwide Photography Ltd. , women can be seen diligently packaging refrigerators that roll off the production line. These hardworking individuals played an essential role in ensuring that households across Britain had access to modern domestic appliances. Although the Morphy Richards facility still stands on this historic site today, it no longer produces its own products but imports them from foreign manufacturers. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of an era when British manufacturing thrived and local communities relied on industries like GEC for employment opportunities. Through this snapshot of industrial history, we gain insight into the dedication and craftsmanship behind each fridge produced at GEC's Swinton factory during the vibrant sixties.
