One Good Turn Deserves Another. The Working Man Enlightening the Superior Classes, 1858

One Good Turn Deserves Another. The Working Man Enlightening the Superior Classes, 1858. This was a time in which the educated minority spent much time posing as the Working Mans Friend. Many didactic lectures aimed at the moral improvement of the working classes were delivered by those seeking votes and popularity, as well as those with a genuine interest in the wellbeing of the proletariat. Middle-class women Evangelicals spent much of their newly acquired free time in visiting the homes of the working classes in order to teach them the womanly skills of the good housewife. Here, Mr Punch pokes gentle fun at all those philanthropists by suggesting that the tables be turned, and the Working Man be given an opportunity to enlighten his social superiors. So, the working class man stands behind the table on the dais with his hammer before him, to deliver his lecture to the rather astonished middle- and upper-class audience. From Punch, or the London Charivari, October 30, 1858

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this intriguing print titled "One Good Turn Deserves Another. The Working Man Enlightening the Superior Classes, 1858" we are transported back to a time when the educated elite took on the role of being the working man's advocate. During this era, numerous didactic lectures were given by those seeking political favor or genuine concern for the welfare of the proletariat. However, Mr Punch, in his characteristic satirical manner, humorously suggests that it is now time for a reversal of roles. The tables have turned as we see a working-class man standing confidently behind a podium with his hammer before him. He prepares to deliver an enlightening lecture to an audience composed mainly of middle- and upper-class individuals who appear somewhat astonished by this unexpected twist. This image captures the essence of social dynamics during that period - where middle-class women Evangelicals would visit working-class homes to impart their knowledge on domestic skills and good housekeeping practices. Now, it seems only fair that the working man should have an opportunity to share his wisdom and experiences with his social superiors. Through this clever visual commentary from "Punch, or the London Charivari" in October 1858, we are reminded that true understanding and progress can be achieved through mutual respect and exchange between different classes. It serves as a reminder that everyone has something valuable to contribute regardless of their social status or background.
