Gospel Book with Evangelist Portraits: Saint John, c. 1480. Creator: Hausbuch Master (German)

Gospel Book with Evangelist Portraits: Saint John, c. 1480. Each of the four gospels, here in Latin, are preceded by a full-page miniature of the appropriate Evangelist. As is conventional, the Evangelists are represented as contemporary scribes seated at a lectern surrounded by all the accouterments of the trade---inkpots, quill pens, penknives, etc. The miniatures style is characteristically German late Gothic in its expressive use of angular drapery and realistic detail. Each miniature, however, bears the marks of The Hausbuch Masters hand: notice the terrace space for each figure and the emphasis on realistically rendered details, such as the furniture construction and the tools of the scribe as well as the facial types, with their heavy-lidded, downcast eyes. This artist was occasionally noted for his humor, as here in the portrait of the Evangelist John in which he depicted the saint erasing an error in his text with a pen knife in his left hand and a quill pen in his right. The skillful penwork, tracery, vine scrolls, and the large initials are the work of the other artists. The binding is original. The Hausbuch Master is known primarily for an album of lively drawings as well as some ninety copper engravings. He was also a panel painter of some distinction

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a Gospel Book with Evangelist Portraits, specifically Saint John, created around 1480 by the talented Hausbuch Master from Germany. The book features each of the four gospels in Latin, accompanied by full-page miniatures of the corresponding Evangelists. In line with tradition, these portraits depict the Evangelists as contemporary scribes seated at a lectern surrounded by various tools of their trade such as inkpots, quill pens, and penknives. The distinctive style of this German late Gothic artwork is characterized by angular drapery and meticulous attention to detail. The Hausbuch Master's touch can be recognized through his signature techniques including the use of terrace spaces for each figure and an emphasis on realistic elements like furniture construction and scribe tools. Notably, this particular portrait of Saint John reveals the artist's playful side as he humorously depicts the saint erasing an error in his text using a pen knife in one hand while holding a quill pen in the other. While other artists contributed to this masterpiece through skillful penwork, tracery designs, vine scrolls, and large initials; it is clear that The Hausbuch Master was responsible for its overall composition and execution. This remarkable piece not only highlights his talent as a panel painter but also serves as a testament to his versatility across different artistic mediums. Preserved within its original binding, this Gospel Book stands as both an exquisite example of religious artistry from the late 15th century and a testament to The Hausbuch Master's enduring legacy in both drawings and copper engravings.
