The oath of office was administered by the venerable Chief Justice; after which the members of the Senate, preceded by the Vice-President, Secretary, and Sergeant-at-Arms, returned to the Senate Chamber; and the President, accompanied by the Committee of Arrangement, proceeded to the President's house...During the afternoon thousands of citizens and strangers crowded to the executive mansion to pay their respects...'.
