Large scale, commercial agriculture, Salinas Valley, California, 1939. Creator: Dorothea Lange

Salinas Valley, California. Large scale, commercial agriculture. This single California County (Monterey) shipped 20, 096 carlots of lettuce in 1934, or forty-five percent of all carlot shipments in the United States. In the same year 73.8 percent of all United States carlot shipments were made from Monterey County, Imperial Valley, California (7, 797 carlots) and Maricopa County, Arizona (4, 697). Production of lettuce is largely in the hands of a comparatively small number of grower-shippers, many of whom operate in two or all three of these counties. Labor is principally Mexican and Filipino in the fields, and white American in the packing sheds. Many workers follow the harvests from one valley to the other, since plantings are staggered to maintain a fairly even flow of lettuce to the Eastern market throughout the year

EDITORS COMMENTS
"This photograph, taken by Dorothea Lange in 1939, captures the vast expanse of large-scale commercial agriculture in the Salinas Valley of California during the 1930s. At the time, Monterey County in California was the leading producer of lettuce in the United States, accounting for 45% of all carlot shipments in the country. The image showcases the furrowed fields, where laborers, primarily Mexican and Filipino in the fields and white American in the packing sheds, worked to maintain a consistent supply of lettuce to the Eastern market throughout the year. The staggered plantings in Monterey County, Imperial Valley, California, and Maricopa County, Arizona, enabled a year-round harvest. The agricultural industry was dominated by a small number of grower-shippers, many of whom operated in multiple counties. The Great Depression and the subsequent economic downturn did not spare the agricultural sector, but the region's focus on commercial agriculture continued to thrive, shaping the rural landscape and the lives of the workers who toiled in the fields." This photograph is a testament to the regionalism and economic realities of the time, captured through the lens of Dorothea Lange, a renowned American photographer known for her documentation of the Great Depression and the Farm Security Administration. The image is part of the Office of War Information collection at the Library of Congress. The negative is a nitrate, and the photograph is a valuable heritage art piece, providing a glimpse into the rural life and the agricultural industry during the 1930s. The photograph is not related to any specific company and is intended for educational and historical purposes only.
