Lord Napier Of Magdala, 1860s, (1901). Creator: Unknown

Lord Napier Of Magdala, 1860s, (1901). Portrait of British soldier Robert Cornelis Napier, Baron Napier of Magdala (1810-1890). Napier was commissioned in the Bengal engineers in 1826. He served in the first and second Sikh Wars and helped in the relief of Lucknow in 1858 during the Indian mutiny. In 1867-68 he commanded what was regarded as a textbook campaign to free British prisoners in Ethiopia, culminating in the capture of Magdala, for which he was raised to the peerage. He went on to become commander in chief of the forces in India in 1870 and in 1876 was made Governor of Gibraltar. From " The Life and Deeds of Earl Roberts, Vol. II. - To The Abdication of Yakub Khan", by J. Maclaren Cobban. [T. C. & E. C. Jack, Edinburgh, 1901]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Lord Napier of Magdala, a distinguished British soldier from the 1860s. The portrait captures the essence of Robert Cornelis Napier, Baron Napier of Magdala (1810-1890), who had an illustrious military career. Commissioned in the Bengal engineers in 1826, he played significant roles in both the first and second Sikh Wars. Notably, he contributed to the relief of Lucknow during the Indian mutiny in 1858. However, it was his remarkable campaign to liberate British prisoners held captive in Ethiopia that truly solidified his reputation as a brilliant strategist. Considered a textbook example of military prowess, this operation culminated in the capture of Magdala and subsequently led to his elevation to peerage. Lord Napier's accomplishments did not end there; he went on to become commander-in-chief of forces in India by 1870 and later assumed the role of Governor of Gibraltar in 1876. This photograph is featured within "The Life and Deeds of Earl Roberts". Volume II - To The Abdication of Yakub Khan by J. Maclaren Cobban (1901). Its black-and-white composition adds depth and historical significance to this portrayal. As we gaze upon this image, we are reminded not only of Lord Napier's contributions but also Britain's imperial legacy during this era. His resolute presence exudes strength and determination while serving as a testament to an extraordinary chapter in history that shaped nations and defined empires.
