Mr. S. Laing, the new Finance Minister in India - from a photograph by John Watkin, 1860. Creator: Unknown

Mr. S. Laing, the new Finance Minister in India - from a photograph by John Watkin, 1860. Mr. Samuel Laing, M.P. for the Wick Burghs, and Secretary of the Treasury...has just accepted the seat at the Indian Council in Calcutta...[He] was for many years a private (mathematical) tutor of the highest class in Cambridge. He was called to the Bar by the Hon. Society of Lincoln's Inn in 1840, but does not appear at once to have practised his profession...In 1844 he published an elaborate "Report on British and Foreign Railways"...In 1848 he was made chairman and managing director of the Brighton Railway Company, and during his five years of office the passenger traffic on the line was nearly doubled. In 1852 he became chairman of the Crystal Palace Company. He has been engaged in the direction of the Grand Central and Grand Junction Railways in France; of the Antwerp and Rotterdam and Simbart lines in Holland; and the Great Western Railway of Canada...He was again returned for the Wick Burghs in 1859, and, on Lord Palmerston's accession to office, was appointed Secretary to the Treasury'. EDITORS COMMENTS
Mr. Samuel Laing, a distinguished British statesman and mathematician, is seen in this photograph taken by John Watkin in 1860, shortly after his appointment as the new Finance Minister in India. Mr. Laing, who was the Member of Parliament for Wick Burghs, had an impressive academic background. He began his career as a private mathematical tutor of the highest class at the University of Cambridge. After being called to the Bar by the Hon. Society of Lincoln's Inn in 1840, he did not immediately practice law but instead focused on his expertise in railways. In 1844, Mr. Laing published an intricate "Report on British and Foreign Railways," showcasing his extensive knowledge in this field. His impressive work did not go unnoticed, and in 1848, he was appointed chairman and managing director of the Brighton Railway Company. Under his leadership, passenger traffic on the line nearly doubled within five years. In 1852, he became chairman of the Crystal Palace Company. Mr. Laing's international railway experience extended beyond the United Kingdom. He was engaged in the direction of the Grand Central and Grand Junction Railways in France, the Antwerp and Rotterdam and Simbart lines in Holland, and the Great Western Railway of Canada. In 1859, he was once again returned as the Member of Parliament for Wick Burghs. Following Lord Palmerston's accession to office, Mr. Laing was appointed as the Secretary to the Treasury, marking the beginning of his illustrious political career in India.
