Oates and Meares Out Ski-Ing in the Night, c1911, (1913). Artist: Herbert Ponting

Oates and Meares Out Ski-Ing in the Night, c1911, (1913). Captain Lawrence Titus Oates (1880-1912) and dog-team driver Cecil Meares on skis. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume I. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

Oates and Meares Out Ski-Ing in the Night, c1911, (1913) - A Glimpse into Scott's Ill-Fated Expedition

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures the indomitable spirit of Captain Lawrence Titus Oates and dog-team driver Cecil Meares as they venture out on skis during the Terra Nova Expedition. Led by British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott, this final expedition aimed to conquer the South Pole while conducting groundbreaking scientific research. The image showcases Oates and Meares skillfully navigating through the treacherous Antarctic terrain under a starlit sky. The faint glow of their lanterns illuminates their determined faces, highlighting their unwavering resolve even in the face of extreme conditions. Scott's team consisted of experts from various fields including geology, zoology, photography, engineering, skiing expertise, meteorology, and physics. Their collective efforts were dedicated to advancing scientific knowledge about Antarctica. However, fate dealt a cruel blow to Scott's ambitions. Despite reaching the geographic South Pole on 17 January 1912 with Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans; they discovered that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had beaten them there by a month. Tragically delayed by blizzards and dwindling supplies during their return journey from the pole; Scott and his remaining team members succumbed to exhaustion and freezing temperatures at the end of March. It was not until eight months later that their bodies were discovered along with poignant diaries detailing their heroic struggle for survival. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of both human resilience in pursuit of discovery and exploration but also highlights nature's unforgiving power over mankind's aspirations.
