One of 21 watercolors (out of an original 27) from an album relating to the history of the Siberian Cossacks held by the Rare Books Department of the Russian State Library in Moscow. The album was created as a gift for the future Tsar Nicholas II (1868-1918, reigned 1895-1917), Most August Ataman of All Cossack Voiskos (Commander of all Cossack troops, a title bestowed by Nicholas I), and presented to him in the summer of 1891 on his return to Saint Petersburg through Siberia from a trip to the Russian Far East. The theme of the album is Cossack history east of the Ural Mountains, beginning with the victory of the Cossack hetman (or ataman) Ermak Timofeevich (died 1585) over Khan Kuchum in 1582 and continuing with subjects from more than three centuries of Russian history

EDITORS COMMENTS
This watercolor painting, created by the Russian artist Nikolay Nikolaevich Karazin, depicts a significant moment in the history of the Siberian Cossacks as they present themselves to Emperor Nikolai Pavlovich at the Mikhailovskii Palace in 1833. The Siberian Cossacks, a military and social group of predominantly Russian settlers in Siberia, had played a crucial role in the expansion of the Russian Empire eastward since the late 16th century. The image captures the grandeur and pride of the Cossacks as they proudly display their military prowess before the Emperor. The intricate details of their traditional uniforms, adorned with fur hats, leather boots, and ornate weapons, reflect their unique identity and connection to the harsh Siberian landscape. The Emperor, dressed in his imperial robes, gazes intently at the Cossacks, acknowledging their loyalty and bravery. This painting is one of 21 watercolors from an album relating to the history of the Siberian Cossacks, which was created as a gift for the future Tsar Nicholas II in 1891. The album, held by the Rare Books Department of the Russian State Library in Moscow, showcases the rich history of the Cossacks east of the Ural Mountains, beginning with the victory of the Cossack hetman Ermak Timofeevich over Khan Kuchum in 1582 and continuing through more than three centuries of Russian history. The album was presented to Nicholas II during his return journey to Saint Petersburg from a trip to the Russian Far East. The painting is a testament to the enduring legacy of the Siberian Cossacks and their contribution to the development of the Russian Empire.
