Sketches from British Columbia: Port Anderson, Anderson Lake, 1864. Creator: Unknown
Sketches from British Columbia: Port Anderson, Anderson Lake, 1864. This port and town, though at present in "embryo, " is pleasantly situated; and its bit of clear land will not fail to cheer the heart of the traveller, after having journeyed through so many miles of dense pine forest. Anderson Lake (fifteen miles in length) is, like all the others, bounded by lofty romantic but sterile mountains. The passage by steamer occupies about an hour and a half, landing us on a narrow neck of land, little over a mile in width, through which a tramroad is laid down for conveyance of freight. At the end of this portage we reach Seton Lake, sixteen miles in length. Again we embark in a small steamer, and in two horns land at Port Seton'. From "Illustrated London News", 1864

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of British Columbia in 1864, showcasing Sketches from Port Anderson and Anderson Lake. The unknown creator beautifully depicts the picturesque port town nestled among towering mountains and serene waters. The scene is described as "embryo," yet promising, with clear land that offers a respite from the dense pine forests that characterize the region.
Anderson Lake stretches fifteen miles in length, surrounded by rugged but awe-inspiring mountains. A steamer journey through this stunning landscape takes travelers to Seton Lake, another sixteen-mile stretch of natural beauty. The narrow neck of land between these two lakes is traversed by a tramroad for transporting goods, highlighting the importance of trade and transportation in this remote location.
The log cabins dotting the landscape add a touch of pioneer charm to this wild frontier setting. Steamboats play a crucial role in connecting these isolated communities, providing vital links for commerce and communication in this untamed wilderness.
This historical engraving from the Illustrated London News offers a glimpse into life in 19th-century British Columbia, capturing the spirit of adventure and exploration that defined this era. It serves as a reminder of our enduring connection to nature and our relentless pursuit of progress against all odds.
