EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the powerful presence of St Elizabeth of Hungary and St Lucy, two significant figures in Christian history. The image, created in 1878, beautifully captures the essence of these remarkable women. St Elizabeth of Hungary (1207-1231) was born into Hungarian royalty but chose a life dedicated to serving others. After her husband's untimely death during a crusade, she joined the Franciscan order and devoted herself to caring for the poor. Her asceticism and piety made her widely revered. St Lucy (d304), on the other hand, met a tragic fate as she became a martyr for her faith. During Emperor Diocletian's persecution of Christians in Sicily, she was executed by sword in Syracuse. Her unwavering devotion to Christianity has made her an enduring symbol of faith and courage. In this portrait, both saints are depicted wearing medieval attire that reflects their respective time periods - St Elizabeth from the 13th century and St Lucy from the 4th century. Their regal crowns serve as reminders of their royal lineage while also emphasizing their spiritual authority. The chromolithograph technique used to create this print adds depth and vibrancy to every detail, making it an exquisite piece of artistry. Whether displayed in homes or religious institutions, this image serves as a reminder of these extraordinary women who exemplified piousness and selflessness throughout history.
