EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the construction of the Second Severn Crossing, showcasing the dedication and expertise of a student engineer and a chain girl as they conduct surveys. Set against the picturesque backdrop of New Passage, Pilning, and Severn Beach in South Gloucestershire, their meticulous work is complemented by the presence of the Jay Robertson barge diligently operating in the River Severn. The Jay Robertson played an instrumental role during this project, serving as a large jack-up barge responsible for drilling piles through the sea bed to support two viaduct piers near the iconic Severn Rail Tunnel. Its imposing figure dominates the background, symbolizing both progress and innovation. Published in December 1992 within Laings monthly newsletter Team Spirit, this photograph from Historic England Archive offers us a glimpse into an era defined by ambitious infrastructure development. The image not only showcases remarkable engineering feats but also highlights gender diversity within traditionally male-dominated fields. The inclusion of women actively participating in surveying activities serves as a testament to their invaluable contributions throughout history.
