EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the construction of the Birmingham to Preston Motorway (M6) in Hyde Lea, Staffordshire. The image showcases Bridge 306, also known as Barn Bank Lane bridge, with the first of its large post-tensioned beams being concreted in situ. The photograph reveals a group of dedicated workers diligently placing concrete onto one of these colossal beams. Measuring an impressive 95 feet long and weighing a staggering 70 tons, these beams posed handling difficulties that necessitated their casting on top of the abutments and piers. Highlighted by the typed caption below, it becomes evident that this particular beam has already been stressed and is now self-supporting across its span. This remarkable feat of civil engineering represents a major milestone in the construction process. Dating back to March 1962, this road bridge played an integral role in connecting communities along the M6 motorway. Its strategic location at SJ9211419999 made it an essential link for commuters traveling between Birmingham and Preston during that era. Preserved within Historic England Archive's collection, this photograph not only documents a pivotal moment in infrastructure development but also pays tribute to the hard work and dedication exhibited by those involved in shaping our transportation networks.
