Steep climb JLP01_08_084446

STAFFORDSHIRE. A team of men installing the Barlaston pipeline against a steep and unstable embankment beside the A34 dual carriageway.
The contract for the Barlaston gas pipeline was awarded to Laing Pipelines in January 1970. The pipeline ran for approximately 29 miles from Uffington, near Shrewsbury, to Barlaston in North Staffordshire. Along the route there were 61 crossings, including under the M6, the main electric railway from Euston to Crewe, two canals and six rivers, and a steep climb alongside the A34 dual carriageway near Barlaston. This photograph shows where the pipeline emerges from beneath the road and then bends at a 45 degree angle to climb up the embankment

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a remarkable feat of engineering from the 1970s. In the heart of Staffordshire, a team of dedicated men can be seen fearlessly installing the Barlaston pipeline against an imposing and unstable embankment beside the bustling A34 dual carriageway. Awarded to Laing Pipelines in January 1970, this ambitious project involved laying a gas pipeline spanning approximately 29 miles from Uffington to Barlaston. Along its route, there were numerous challenges to overcome, including navigating under major infrastructure such as the M6 motorway and electric railway lines. However, it is this particular section that truly stands out - a steep climb alongside the A34 dual carriageway near Barlaston. The photograph showcases where the pipeline emerges triumphantly from beneath the road before bending at an impressive 45-degree angle to ascend up the treacherous embankment. The determination and skill exhibited by these workers is evident in their unwavering commitment to completing this arduous task. Their efforts not only ensured safe transportation of gas but also showcased their expertise in civil engineering. This image serves as a testament to human ingenuity and perseverance in overcoming formidable obstacles for progress. It reminds us of our ability to conquer even nature's most challenging terrains through collaboration and innovation.
