Topping out JLP01_09_781093
THE SHOPPING CENTRE, SILBURY BOULEVARD, MILTON KEYNES. The last load of concrete being shovelled on the roof of the John Lewis store restaurant during the construction of the shopping centre in Milton Keynes.
Rather than a symbolic shovelful of concrete or the placing of a single tile like at most topping out ceremonies, members of the project management team were invited to help with the final 37 cubic metres of concrete. A total of 70, 000 cubic metres of concrete were used in the whole shopping centre complex.
This photograph was used in the June 1978 issue of Team Spirit, the Laing company newsletter. It showss Green, Project Manager for Milton Keynes Development Corporation assisted by R Corkery

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the construction of The Shopping Centre on Silbury Boulevard, Milton Keynes. As the John Lewis store restaurant nears completion, we witness the topping out ceremony where the last load of concrete is being shoveled onto its roof. Unlike traditional ceremonies that involve symbolic gestures, this event took a more inclusive approach by inviting members of the project management team to assist with pouring 37 cubic meters of concrete. It is astonishing to learn that a staggering 70,000 cubic meters were used throughout the entire shopping center complex. Published in Team Spirit, Laing company's newsletter in June 1978, this photograph showcases Green, Project Manager for Milton Keynes Development Corporation alongside R Corkery as they contribute their efforts towards this monumental milestone. The image exudes an atmosphere of hard work and dedication as these individuals don their hard hats and boots while smiling at their accomplishment. The composition beautifully combines elements such as steel structures and people at work against the backdrop of ongoing construction activities. This snapshot from the 1970s encapsulates not only an important phase in architectural history but also represents teamwork and progress within Milton Keynes' development.
