EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "ÒÇÄþö╗µ£¼ÞÖ½µÆ░ÒÇÅ ÒÇîµØ¥ÞÖ½ÒÇì Tree cricket" transports us to the enchanting world of Japanese art during the Edo period. Created by renowned artist Kitagawa Utamaro, this woodblock printed book showcases fifteen exquisite designs of insects and garden creatures. The delicate lines and vibrant colors bring to life the intricate details of a tree cricket, known as matsumushi in Japanese folklore. Its slender body rests gracefully on a branch, while its wings shimmer with an ethereal glow reminiscent of fireflies (hotaru). The picture book, or ehon mushi erami, serves as a visual ode to these crawling creatures that inhabit Japan's natural landscapes. Published in 1788 by Tsutaya Jūzaburō, this masterpiece also features selected poems accompanied by a preface written by poet and scholar Yadoya Meshimori Rokujuen. It is through their words that we gain deeper insight into the profound connection between nature and poetry during this influential era. Measuring 10 1/2 x 7 7/32 inches (267 x 184 cm), this print exemplifies Utamaro's mastery of ink and color on paper. As we gaze upon it, we are transported back in time to experience the beauty and tranquility captured within its frame. The
