EDITORS COMMENTS
Albert of Saxony, born on August 28, 1828, ascended the throne as the King of Saxony on November 17, 1873, following the death of his father, King John I. Albert was a prominent member of the House of Wettin, one of the most distinguished and influential European royal families. His reign lasted until his own death on June 19, 1902. This striking portrait of Albert, taken in the year 1890, captures the regal presence and dignified demeanor of the monarch. The image showcases Albert's distinguished beard, which was a common feature among European royals during the late 19th century. The photograph also highlights Albert's formal attire, which includes a decorative military uniform adorned with various orders and medals. Albert was not only a respected monarch but also an accomplished politician. He played a significant role in the political landscape of Germany, serving as the President of the German Confederation from 1859 to 1866. Albert's reign in Saxony was marked by modernization and industrialization, as well as a period of relative peace and stability. The House of Wettin, which traces its origins back to the 11th century, has produced numerous rulers of various German states, including Saxony, Poland, and Bohemia. Albert's reign marked the end of the House's long and illustrious history as a ruling dynasty in Germany. Today, the legacy of Albert and the House of Wettin continues to be celebrated as an important chapter in the history of German monarchy and European royalty.
