EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative image from ancient history, Caractacus, the brave and defiant British chief, is led through the triumphant streets of Rome following his capture in 51 AD. Born as Caradoc or Cunobelinus, Caractacus was the last major leader of the British resistance against the advancing Roman Empire. He had successfully united various British tribes against the common enemy and managed to hold off the Roman forces for several years. However, his forces were eventually defeated in the Battle of Camulodunum (Colchester), and Caractacus was captured while trying to flee to Scotland. The Roman general Aulus Plautius, who had led the invasion of Britain, ordered Caractacus to be brought to Rome to be displayed as a captive in his triumphal procession. The image captures the moment of Caractacus' humiliation as he is paraded through the streets of Rome, surrounded by Roman soldiers and citizens, who would have marveled at the sight of the vanquished British chief. Caractacus is shown wearing a simple tunic and with a chain around his neck, signifying his defeat and subjugation. His proud and defiant expression, despite his captivity, speaks volumes of his unyielding spirit. The fall of Caractacus marked the end of significant resistance to Roman rule in Britain, paving the way for the establishment of a Roman province. The image is a poignant reminder of the clash of cultures and the impact of the Roman conquest on the British Isles. It also underscores the enduring legacy of Caractacus as a symbol of British resistance and resilience in the face of adversity.
