Her signature, "Caroline Norton, Carrick," is elegantly written in the bottom left corner. Born into a prominent literary family, Norton was the daughter of Thomas Sheridan, an Irish playwright, and Frances Sheridan, a novelist. She married the prominent politician and poet, George Norton, in 1827. However, her marriage was fraught with domestic abuse and neglect, which led her to become an advocate for women's rights and reforms in the English legal system. Norton's writing career began in earnest after her separation from her husband, and she gained recognition for her novels, poems, and essays on social issues. Her most famous work, "The Story of Mary Dunne," was published in 1834 and brought attention to the plight of women in abusive marriages. Norton's advocacy efforts led to the passing of the Matrimonial Causes Act in 1857, which granted women more rights in divorce proceedings. This portrait is a testament to Norton's enduring legacy as a trailblazing writer and social reformer. Her signature, "Carrick," reflects her later marriage to Sir Charles Grant, 7th Baronet, with whom she had a happy and supportive union.
