Gordon's service in the British Army began in 1852, and he quickly rose through the ranks due to his exceptional leadership abilities and bravery in battle. He gained fame for his role in the Crimean War and the suppression of the Chinese Taiping Rebellion. In 1877, Gordon was appointed as the Governor-General of the Sudan, where he aimed to bring order and stability to the region. Despite facing numerous challenges and adversities, including the Mahdist War, Gordon remained committed to his mission. He is best known for his heroic defense of Khartoum, the Sudanese capital, during the Siege of Khartoum in 1884-1885. Tragically, Gordon was killed during the final assault on the city on January 26, 1885.
