EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1798, showcases a fascinating gathering of some of the most iconic primates from the Old World: the Chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes), Bornean Orang Utan (Pongo pygmaeus), Guinea Baboon (Papio papio), Cape Baboon (Papio ursinus porcarius), Central Yellow Baboon (Simia seniculus), and the Threatened Papio cynocephalus. The Chimpanzee, an endangered species native to Central and West Africa, is depicted in the foreground, with its distinctive crested crown and long, powerful limbs. The Bornean Orang Utan, another endangered primate, is shown in the background, clinging to a tree branch with remarkable agility. The Guinea Baboon, classified as near threatened, is portrayed in the lower left corner, its face expressing curiosity and intelligence. The Cape Baboon, with its porcine features and threatened status, is shown in the lower right corner, while the Central Yellow Baboon, also near threatened, is depicted in the upper right corner. In the background, the Papio cynocephalus, a threatened species, can be seen in a more obscure position. This historical illustration provides a glimpse into the natural world of the late 18th century, showcasing the diversity and beauty of primates. It serves as a reminder of the importance of conservation efforts to protect these fascinating creatures and their habitats.
