EDITORS COMMENTS
Heroes All!: A Commemorative Postcard Honoring the Brave Coastguards and Civilians of Leysdown, Isle of Sheppey, Kent, Who Risked Their Lives to Rescue Members of the 2nd Walworth Boy Scouts Troop During a Tragic Storm in August 1912. On the fateful day of August 4, 1912, the 23 Sea Scouts, their Scout Master, and five helpers of the 2nd Walworth Boy Scouts Troop were aboard their 32-foot ex-naval cutter for a training voyage off the coast of Leysdown, Isle of Sheppey, in Kent. However, their day took an unexpected turn when a sudden squall hit the vessel, capsizing it and leaving 19 scouts, the Scout Master, and one helper in the water. The tragic event was widely reported in newspapers across the country, with the loss of nine young lives leaving a deep impact on the community. In memory of the brave scouts who drowned, a memorial was erected in Nunhead Cemetery in 1914. Amidst the chaos, five coastguards and two civilians of Leysdown displayed remarkable courage and heroism, risking their own lives to save those in peril. The chief coastguard, Mr. Burnett, led the rescue efforts, with the help of Mr. Berry, Mr. Twining, Mr. Bawden, and two unnamed civilians. They worked tirelessly to bring the survivors to safety, demonstrating the true meaning of heroism and selflessness. This commemorative postcard, featuring a photograph of these five brave coastguards and two civilians, serves as a reminder of the tragic accident and the heroic actions of those who risked their lives to save others. The image, taken by Mary Evans, is a testament to the enduring spirit of community and resilience in the face of adversity.
