D Ye Ken John Peel in his Coat so Grey by Joseph Simpson
John Peel (1776? 13 November 1854), English huntsman and the subject of the nineteenth century song D ye ken John Peel - " ken" meaning to be aware of or to know in some dialects of the North of England. Peel became a moderately well-known figure, owing to the song written about him. Some of the local gentry, after his death, were glad to take on his sons as servants, and the story of Peel romanticized hunting activities for many. He died in 1854 and is buried in the churchyard of St Kentigerns Church, Caldbeck. In 1977 his grave was vandalised by anti-hunting activists. Date: 1937

EDITORS COMMENTS
D Ye Ken John Peel: A Portrait of an Iconic Huntsman by Joseph Simpson This evocative black and white portrait captures the character and essence of John Peel (1776?-1854), a humble huntsman from the northern English village of Caldbeck, who became the subject of a popular nineteenth-century folk song, "D Ye Ken John Peel." The phrase "ken" in the song's title refers to the dialect term for being aware of or knowing someone. Peel, with his distinctive grey coat, top hat, and whip, was a moderately well-known figure in his community. His life and hunting activities were romanticized in the song, and after his death, some local gentry took on his sons as servants. The image of Peel as a symbol of traditional hunting practices endured, and his grave in the churchyard of St Kentigerns Church, Caldbeck, remains a pilgrimage site for those who appreciate the rich history of rural England. This portrait by Joseph Simpson, created in 1937, offers a glimpse into the past and preserves the memory of a man who embodied the spirit of the hunt and the rugged charm of the northern English countryside. Simpson's skillful use of light and shadow adds depth and character to the image, making it a captivating and enduring work of art.
