EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures Louis Auguste de Bourbon, Duc de Maine (1670-1736), the illegitimate son of King Louis XIV of France and Madame de Maintenon. Born in 1670, Louis Auguste was recognized by his father late in life and was granted the title of Duc de Maine in 1680. The relationship between Louis XIV and Madame de Maintenon was kept secret until the king's death in 1715. Despite his royal lineage, Louis Auguste's life was far from ordinary. He was involved in a conspiracy against Philippe, the Duke of Orléans, who served as regent during the minority of Louis XV. The plot, known as the "Conspiracy of the Presles," aimed to seize power and place Louis Auguste on the throne. The conspiracy was discovered in 1717, and Louis Auguste was exiled to the Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. This portrait, likely painted in the late 17th or early 18th century, showcases the Duc de Maine's striking features and regal bearing. His piercing gaze and well-groomed appearance convey a sense of confidence and determination, hinting at the ambition that drove him to attempt a power grab. Despite the failed conspiracy, Louis Auguste continued to play a role in French politics, serving as a diplomat and advisor to various European courts. He died in 1736, leaving behind a complex and intriguing legacy as the illegitimate son of a king and a key player in French political intrigue.
