EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the ancient Egyptian mummy of an old woman named Katebet, who lived during the Eighteenth Dynasty of ancient Egypt, around 1550-1298 BC. Katebet was a renowned Chantress of Amun-Ra in the ancient city of Karnak. Her mummified remains are a testament to the intricate funerary rites and rituals practiced by the ancient Egyptians to ensure a peaceful afterlife for their deceased. The mummy is wrapped in linen, a common practice to preserve the body for the afterlife. The most striking feature of Katebet's mummy is the painted cartonnage mummy-mask with a gilded face. This headcase, also known as a headcase or a headrest, was attached to the mummy to protect and preserve the head. The mask is adorned with intricate designs and symbols, reflecting the ancient Egyptian belief in the importance of the afterlife and the role of the gods in the journey of the soul. Two studs of calcite are placed through the wig into the ears of the mummy, adding to its regal appearance. The wooden arms bearing jewellery are also an essential part of the mummy's preservation, as they helped to keep the arms in place and prevent decay. This photograph, taken in the early 1920s, captures the awe-inspiring beauty and mystery of ancient Egyptian culture, which continues to fascinate and captivate us to this day. The mummy of Katebet, with its intricate details and historical significance, is a must-see exhibit at the British Museum in London, offering a glimpse into the rich history and traditions of ancient Egypt.
