EDITORS COMMENTS
Elisabeth Charlotte Françoise Marie Therèse Gabrielle de Bourbon, better known as Elisabeth Duchesse de Guise, was a prominent figure in the French court during the late 17th century. Born on March 27, 1646, she was the daughter of Jean Baptiste Gaston de Bourbon, Duke of Orleans, and his wife, Marguerite Louise d'Orléans. Elisabeth's father was a brother of King Louis XIII and the Regent of France during the minority of King Louis XIV. Her mother was a sister of Anne of Austria, the queen consort of King Louis XIII. Elisabeth's upbringing in the royal court provided her with a privileged education and a strong sense of duty and loyalty to the French monarchy. In 1663, Elisabeth married Louis Joseph, Duke of Guise, the third son of Cardinal Richelieu. The marriage was a strategic alliance intended to strengthen the Guise family's position at court. The couple had seven children together, including the future Duke of Guise, Léonor. Elisabeth was known for her beauty, intelligence, and grace. She was a patron of the arts and supported the development of the Opéra de Paris. She was also a devout Catholic and played an active role in the religious and charitable institutions of Paris. Elisabeth's life was marked by tragedy. Her husband, Louis Joseph, died in 1671, and her eldest son, Léonor, was killed in a duel in 1675. Despite these losses, Elisabeth continued to serve the French monarchy, acting as a regent for her younger son, Charles, during his minority. Elisabeth died on November 12, 1696, at the age of 50. She is buried in the Church of Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois in Paris. Elisabeth Duchesse de Guise was a remarkable woman who played an important role in French history as a wife, mother, and influential figure at the French court.
