EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking oil on canvas portrait depicts Field Marshal Lord Roberts of Kandahar, a renowned British military leader and recipient of the Victoria Cross, in his full dress uniform with an impressive array of orders and medals. Painted by Frank Markham Skipworth in 1917, the portrait is a replica of an original work by John Singer Sargent, created in 1904. Lord Roberts, born in 1832, is shown standing confidently in a pillared portico, his sword under his left arm. The Field Marshal's military career began in India, where he gained fame for his victories in the Second Afghan War and the Second Anglo-Burmese War. He later served as Commander-in-Chief of the British Army and played a significant role in the Second Boer War. His military accomplishments earned him numerous honors, including the Victoria Cross, the highest decoration for valor in the British military, as well as the Order of the Garter, the highest order of chivalry in the United Kingdom. The portrait captures the essence of Lord Roberts' distinguished military career and his status as a respected and revered figure in British military history.
