This print depicts the Irish Brigade of New York, a distinguished military unit comprised of Irish immigrants who served in the United States Army during the mid-19th century. The image features five prominent figures of the Brigade, standing and mounted, surrounded by their troops in formation. From left to right, the men identified are: Thomas Francis Meagher, commanding officer of the Irish Volunteers; Colonel Michael Corcoran Ferris of the 9th Regiment; John "Napper" Tandy, Captain of the Napper Tandy Light Artillery; Thomas Francis Meagher Fay, Captain of the 70th Regiment; Patrick Murphy, Captain of the Montgomery Guard; John Clancy, Captain of the Brigade Lancers; and John Kerrigan, Captain of the Irish Dragoons. The Irish Brigade was formed in 1848, during the height of the Irish Potato Famine, and was initially called the "Irish Legion." The unit saw action in the Mexican-American War and later in the American Civil War, where they gained a reputation for their bravery and dedication. This print, estimated to have been created around September 27, 1852, offers a unique glimpse into the history of the Irish Brigade of New York and the important role these immigrants played in the military history of the United States. The men in the image stand proudly, reflecting their pride in their heritage and their commitment to their new country.
