Favre's legal career began in 1832 when he was admitted to the Paris Bar. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a renowned lawyer and a professor at the University of Dijon. In 1848, Favre entered politics, joining the Provisional Government during the French Revolution of 1848. He served as the Minister of Justice and later the Minister of the Interior. In 1869, Favre was appointed as the Minister for Foreign Affairs, a position he held until 1870. During his tenure, Favre played a significant role in French foreign policy. He negotiated the Treaty of London (1867), which secured the neutrality of Belgium and prevented a potential war between France and Prussia. Favre also played a crucial role in the Franco-Prussian War, signing the armistice in January 1871 and the peace treaty in May 1871.
