EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures Lady Stradbroke, Helena Fraser, in her role as nursing matron at Henham Hall during the First World War. Lady Stradbroke, who was married to George Rous, the 3rd Earl of Stradbroke, is seen here with three dedicated nurses in the drawing room of their country home in Suffolk. Henham Hall, a grand estate with a rich history, was converted into a military hospital during the war years. The house, which once played host to the elite of society, became a sanctuary for the wounded and weary soldiers who had been directly transported from the battlefields of France. Lady Stradbroke, with her compassionate and efficient leadership, took sole charge as matron of the hospital. The Red Cross, who played a crucial role in the war effort, would later take over the care of the soldiers once they had recovered enough to be moved. Henham Hall, a symbol of the English country estate, stood proudly amidst the rolling Suffolk countryside, providing a glimmer of hope and comfort to the soldiers who passed through its doors. This photograph offers a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the war, as well as the resilience and dedication of the women who played a vital role in the care of the wounded soldiers. Henham Hall, which once stood as a testament to the peerage and society of the time, became a beacon of hope and healing in the midst of the chaos and destruction of war. Unfortunately, Henham Hall was demolished in 1953, leaving only memories and photographs like this one to preserve its history.
