EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking head-and-shoulders portrait of Lieut. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, dated around 1864, captures the intense and focused gaze of one of the most influential military figures in American history. The general, dressed in his military uniform, faces right with a stern expression, his eyes fixed on an unseen horizon. The oval border surrounding the image is adorned with the names of some of the most significant battle sites where Grant made his mark during the American Civil War. Born on April 27, 1822, in Point Pleasant, Ohio, Grant's military career began in the Mexican-American War, where he distinguished himself as a capable and determined officer. However, it was his leadership during the Civil War that would cement his place in history. Grant's strategic brilliance and unyielding determination led him to victory after victory, including the pivotal battles of Shiloh, Vicksburg, and Chattanooga. In 1864, Grant was appointed General-in-Chief of the Union Army, and he set his sights on defeating the Confederacy once and for all. Grant's relentless pursuit of Robert E. Lee's Confederate Army culminated in the siege of Petersburg and the eventual surrender at Appomattox Court House in April 1865. Grant's military accomplishments did not end with the Civil War. He served as the President of the United States from 1869 to 1877, where he worked to rebuild the nation and promote reconciliation between the North and South. This portrait, with its evocative imagery of battle sites and the indomitable spirit of a great military leader, serves as a powerful reminder of Grant's enduring legacy and the pivotal role he played in American history.
