LCC-MFB Poplar fire station, E14

Built by the Metropolitan Board of Works (the forerunner of the London County Council), Poplar fire station was located at 75 West India Dock Road, East London. The widespread adoption of motorised fire engines by the LFB led to a reduction in the number of fire stations required: a report produced in 1920 recommended the closure of 15, and this was one of them. It was subsequently demolished

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the historic Poplar fire station, located at 75 West India Dock Road in East London, which was built by the Metropolitan Board of Works (LCC/MFB) in the 1870s. The Metropolitan Board of Works, the forerunner of the London County Council, was responsible for the construction of this fire station and many others in London during the Victorian era. The widespread adoption of motorised fire engines by the London Fire Brigade (LFB) in the early 20th century led to a significant reduction in the number of fire stations required. A report produced in 1920 recommended the closure of 15 fire stations, and unfortunately, Poplar fire station was one of them. The fire station, a grand Victorian building with red brick facade and ornate detailing, is shown here in its final years before demolition. The fire engines and equipment have been removed, leaving only empty bays and a sense of the history that once filled this important community institution. The Poplar fire station was a vital part of the local area, providing essential firefighting services to the residents of Poplar and the surrounding communities. Its closure marked the end of an era, as London's firefighting capabilities evolved to meet the demands of the modern age. This photograph offers a poignant reminder of the past, and the important role that fire stations play in protecting the lives and property of those in their care. The Poplar fire station may no longer exist, but its legacy lives on in the memories of those who remember it and in the continued dedication of the London Fire Brigade to keeping Londoners safe.
