EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait of Major-General Sir Frederick Barton Maurice was captured by Lieutenant Percival Anderson for the Tatler magazine in 1918, just a few months before the British general was forced to resign from his commission. Born on January 19, 1871, Maurice was a highly respected senior officer in the British Army during World War I, known for his bravery and strategic acumen. However, his career took an unexpected turn when he wrote a letter to The Times criticizing Prime Minister David Lloyd George for making misleading statements about the strength of British forces in France. The letter, which was published on May 10, 1918, led to Maurice's resignation from the military on May 16. Despite the controversy surrounding his departure from the army, Maurice's legacy extended beyond his military career. He went on to found the British Legion in 1920, an organization dedicated to providing financial, social, and emotional support to ex-servicemen and their families. Maurice served as the Legion's president from 1932 to 1947, and his dedication to the cause helped to establish it as a leading charity and advocacy group for veterans. Maurice's military expertise and writing skills also led him to become a military correspondent and writer, contributing to various publications and authoring several books on military strategy and tactics. This portrait captures the intensity and determination of a man who, despite facing professional setbacks, continued to make significant contributions to his country and its veterans.
