EDITORS COMMENTS
Amidst the tumultuous backdrop of the First World War, a sense of normalcy and tradition continued to thrive in the Irish countryside. In this evocative photograph, we find Mrs. Lakin, the indomitable and capable daughter of the late Lord Maurice Fitzgerald of Johnstown Castle, Wexford, proudly assuming the role of Master of the Wexford Foxhounds. In the absence of her husband, Captain M. L. Lakin D.S.O, who was bravely serving with the Hussars at the frontlines, Mrs. Lakin gracefully carried on the esteemed hunting legacy that had been passed down through generations. The Lakin family had been the proud Masters of the Wexford Hunt since 1912, with Captain Lakin taking the reins from his father, Sir Michael, and Lady Lakin. As the war raged on, a number of packs across Britain and Ireland were temporarily taken over by women, demonstrating their resilience and determination in the face of adversity. Mrs. Lakin, dressed in the traditional hunting attire, exudes an air of authority and confidence as she sits atop her horse. The blood-red hunting habit, adorned with gold buttons and a velvet collar, stands out against the lush, green Irish landscape. The image captures not only the essence of rural pursuits and the enduring spirit of the hunt but also the remarkable efforts of women who kept the home front running while their husbands, sons, and fathers were away at the front. This photograph, taken in 1917, serves as a poignant reminder of a bygone era when the bonds between family, tradition, and the land ran deep. It is a testament to the indomitable spirit of those who refused to let the horrors of war disrupt the fabric of their lives, even for a moment.
