EDITORS COMMENTS
Andalusian Chickens: A Victorian Obsession with Exotic Poultry This charming chromolithograph depicts a proud Andalusian cock and hen, their vibrant plumage a testament to the Victorian fascination with exotic poultry breeding. The Andalusian, also known as the Menorquina or Minorca, is a breed of domestic chicken originating from the Balearic Islands of Spain. The breed was first brought to the UK in the late 19th century by H. Leworthy, who bred these birds to great success. The image showcases the first prize-winning Andalusian cock and hen from the Barnstaple shows of 1871 and 1872, respectively. The intricate details of their plumage are beautifully captured in this print, produced by Vincent Brooks Day & Son after an illustration by J.W. Ludlow for Lewis Wright's The Illustrated Book of Poultry, published by Cassell in London in 1890. The Andalusian chicken was a popular addition to the Victorian poultry scene due to its striking appearance and unique characteristics. These birds were often kept for their ornamental value as well as for their meat and eggs. However, their association with the exotic and the allure of competition led to a craze in breeding and showing these birds. Despite their popularity, the Andalusian chicken was not without controversy. The breed's origins were linked to cockfighting, a blood sport that was both legal and socially acceptable during the Victorian era. The fever for exotic poultry, fueled by breeding and shows, contributed to the spread of diseases among poultry populations and the potential for economic loss for farmers. Today, the Andalusian chicken remains a rare and beautiful breed, a reminder of the Victorian obsession with exotic poultry and the role that ornithology played in shaping agricultural practices and cultural trends.
