Battle of Bosworth Field - King Henry VII crowned
The Earl of Richmond is crowned as King Henry VII after defeating Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth Field on 22 August 1485. EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print commemorates the moment when Henry Tudor, Earl of Richmond, was crowned as King Henry VII of England following his decisive victory over Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth Field on 22 August 1485. Henry's claim to the English throne derived from his mother, Lady Margaret Beaufort, who was a great-granddaughter of John of Gaunt, the Duke of Lancaster and fourth son of Edward III. The Lancastrian lineage gave Henry a legitimate claim to the throne, which he seized after defeating the last Plantagenet king, Richard III. The Battle of Bosworth Field marked the end of the Wars of the Roses, a series of civil conflicts between the houses of Lancaster and York, and ushered in a new era of Tudor rule. In this image, Henry is depicted wearing the crown of England, symbolizing his new status as monarch. The print, created in the 15th century, captures the grandeur and significance of this pivotal moment in English history.
