This handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from Gottlieb Tobias Wilhelm's Encyclopedia of Natural History: Fish, published in Augsburg in 1804, showcases the Beluga Sturgeon, scientifically known as Huso huso. The Beluga Sturgeon, also referred to as the White Sturgeon or the European Sturgeon, is a critically endangered species of large, freshwater fish native to the Caspian and Black Seas. The image depicts a Beluga Sturgeon being caught using traditional fishing methods, specifically with a hook and line. The fisherman, seated in a small boat, skillfully holds the line as the sturgeon takes the bait. The use of hooks and lines was a common fishing method for sturgeon in the past, but modern commercial fishing practices, such as the use of gillnets and longlines, have led to drastic population declines.
