EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored steel engraving, created by August Dumenil after an illustration by A. Carie Baron, showcases two intriguing and visually striking plants: the Black Henbane (Hyoscyamus niger, 1) and the Peruvian Primrose-willow (Ludwigia peruviana, 2). The Black Henbane, also known as Stinking Nightshade, is a poisonous plant native to Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia. Its glossy, black-purple berries and large, funnel-shaped flowers with a distinctive yellow star-like center are depicted in the foreground of the image. The Peruvian Primrose-willow, native to South America, is a vibrant aquatic plant with small, pink-purple flowers and lanceolate leaves. The plant's stems are shown entwined around the Black Henbane, creating an intriguing juxtaposition of two distinct and beautiful species. This engraving is taken from the "Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle" (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History) by Felix-Edouard Guerin-Meneville, published in Paris between 1834 and 1839. The meticulous attention to detail and the rich, vibrant colors of this print serve to highlight the unique beauty and intrigue of these two plants, making it an essential addition to any botanical collection.
