EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Bluebird, a groundbreaking gas-turbine powered vehicle that etched its name into the annals of automotive history. Driven by the daring and determined British driver, Donald Campbell, the Bluebird reached unprecedented speeds on the vast, desolate expanse of Lake Eyre in Australia on 17 July 1964. The Bluebird, a marvel of engineering innovation, was designed and built by Campbell and his team in the late 1950s. Powered by a Rolls-Royce Avon jet engine, this vehicle was a far cry from the conventional gasoline-powered automobiles of the era. The Avon engine, typically used in military aircraft, delivered an astounding 7,500 horsepower, enabling the Bluebird to reach speeds in excess of 300 miles per hour. Campbell's quest for the land speed record began in 1955 with the Bluebird CN7, which was powered by a Napier Sabre engine. However, it was with the Bluebird CN7B, depicted in this photograph, that Campbell finally achieved his dream. On that fateful day in July 1964, Campbell reached a top speed of 312.7 mph, shattering the previous record held by the American driver, Craig Breedlove. The Bluebird's record-breaking run on Lake Eyre marked the zenith of Campbell's illustrious career. Tragically, Campbell lost his life during an attempt to break the water speed record in the Bluebird K7 in 1967. Nonetheless, his legacy as a pioneering figure in the world of land speed racing endures, and this photograph serves as a poignant reminder of his indomitable spirit and the awe-inspiring achievements of the Bluebird.
