EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate engraving is a stunning representation of three beloved species of freshwater fish native to the Danube River: the Danube gudgeon (Gobio gobio 156), crucian carp (Carassius carassius 157), and bream (Abramis brama 158). The engraving is taken from the "Fish" volume of the encyclopedic work "Naturwissenschaftliches Magazin" by the Bavarian clergyman and naturalist, Gottlieb Tobias Wilhelm (1758-1811). Wilhelm, who was also known as the German Buffon, meticulously documented various aspects of natural history, including ichthyology, or the study of fish. The Danube gudgeon, depicted in the upper left corner, is a small, bottom-dwelling fish with a brownish-olive back and silver sides. The crucian carp, shown in the center, is a popular game fish with a distinctive, dark, cruciform marking on its sides. The bream, illustrated in the lower right corner, is a large, flat-bodied fish with a silver belly and dark, vertical stripes. This engraving is a testament to Wilhelm's dedication to documenting the natural world and to the artistic skill of the engraver. The intricate details of the fish's scales, fins, and gills are beautifully rendered, making this a valuable addition to any collection of historical natural history prints.
